Your Furnace Has Conked Out? Try Reviving It With These 5 Troubleshooting TipsWondering if your furnace has conked out? Before you call a service professional — and pay for a problem that’s actually a simple fix — try reviving the system with a few troubleshooting tips.

Nearly every HVAC contractor has a story about making an unnecessary service call when a furnace has conked out. But if these simple troubleshooting tips don’t work, call an expert immediately to diagnose the problem:

  • Check the thermostat — If the device isn’t set to “heat,” switch it over. Next, check that the thermostat’s temperature setting is higher than the indoor temperature reading on the device. If it isn’t, the furnace hasn’t conked out: It’s not receiving the signal to cycle on.
  • Check the power – A common culprit of furnace problems, a lack of power to the furnace is generally easy to check. Start at the circuit breaker, and check the furnace fuse. If it’s blown, replace it. Then, check the power switch at the furnace itself. It will look like a light switch. Flip the switch to the “up” position.
  • Check the filter – A full, dirty filter may lead to a malfunctioning furnace. Take the filter out and hold it up to the light. If you can’t see light through the filter material, replace it.
  • Check the gas – The furnace won’t operate if it isn’t receiving fuel from the gas line. Locate the gas pipe, and using the owner’s manual, find the handler near the gas lever, and identify whether it’s in the “on” position. You may want to call your utility company or HVAC contractor for help with this task.
  • Check the exhaust – Snow buildup on the outside exhaust vent can also cause problems. Clear any snow away from the vent.
